I want to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas!
Personally, this is my most favourite time of year. I remember us moving into our first home at the start of December a few years ago, rushing to get everything ready and the Christmas decorations up. It was tiring, but worth it. Since then, Christmas has taken on a new significance for us.
But it’s also the time of year where I get to spend some quality time with Sophie, my family and friends. I work hard every day of the year, and it’s these days off that I appreciate completely. And it also brings life into perspective a little bit too.
I have started to think about the work-life balance. I help run the family installations business, which has grown 15% this year. I run DGB and I run the NFAs. Needless to say, things have been hectic this year. Yet, despite the amount of work I put into all of it, when it comes down to it, they don’t really matter. What matters, at least to me, is the rewards that work brings. The ability to take Sophie away on holiday, to pay for an amazing wedding, to go out to dinner with my family and friends whenever I want. I work to live, not live to work. It doesn’t rule me. Yet, I get the sense that it isn’t the same for everyone.
But it should be. Christmas time should be a time to refocus your own personal priorities. When push comes to shove, the only things in the world that matter are the people we have around us. Family and friends are the most important thing. Even if work, our jobs all goes to the dogs, we still have our family and friends. So take some time, whilst you’re reading this and digesting the immense amount of food and drink you’ve just scoffed, to look at the people around you. This is what is most important.
We should also take a minute to think about those less fortunate. That fact you’re reading this, on whatever device you’re reading it on, means you already have much more in your life than others around the world.
Unfortunately, we have seen many parts of the world suffer from war, conflict and famine. Much of it down to our own inaction and selfishness. It is only right that we spare some time to think about them. At Christmas, not only is it a time to enjoy time with friends and family, but it’s also a time to consider others less fortunate, and what we could do in the next year to help where we can. Perhaps if we all thought beyond our own homes, borders and fortunes, the world will be a fairer, kinder and affluent place for all.
No industry talk today. I want to wish each and everyone one of you a very Merry Christmas. Eat plenty, drink well, put your feet up and soak in the quality time you spend with whoever you’re spending it with!
