Camden Group’s continued growth has led to a £150k investment in their recycling division by establishing a new processing plant on the Prees Industrial Estate in Shropshire.

The site is over 1.5 acres in size and houses the company’s new PVCu processing machinery, weighbridge and warehouse.

Roy Harrison, Camden Group Sales Manager, said: “Camden have a very strong environmental policy. In fact, 80% of all our goods are made from recycled materials. Investing in our own recycling plant here makes economic sense as we can shred the old PVCu frames into much smaller pieces, then transport it back to our manufacturing plant in Northern Ireland.”

The recycling process starts with old frames being delivered to the site and loaded into a concrete silo, where they are then gravity fed into a hammer mill and broken up. The shred is then sorted to remove contamination such as wood, insulation foam, rubber and other plastics. Steel and aluminium are also removed to ensure purity of the PVCu material, which is then shipped to Camden Group’s manufacturing base in Antrim for further processing and ultimately extruded into the core of new window profiles.

Peter Colclough, Commercial Development Manager at the Shropshire site, said: “This process enables us to ship materials more economically than if they were still in complete frames. This improves transport utilisation and is better for the environment.”

The new premises are currently processing 30-50 tonnes of materials a week, and all extracted metals such as steel and aluminium are sold back to dealers to prevent useful items going in to land-fill.

Peter said: “As the Camden Group grows, we need more and more old frames to recycle. If there are any building firms or double-glazing installers out there with a surplus of old PVCu frames we welcome them to get in touch.”
