Saint-Gobain Glass has expanded its STADIP® laminated glass range with the launch of 4.8mm STADIP® PLUS, an innovative thinner laminated glass designed to deliver P2A2 safety and security performance while offering weight1, thermal3 and environmental4 performance benefits.
Suitable for both double and triple-glazed insulated glass units, the new product combines the safety and security credentials of the STADIP® range with a lighter construction that can help fabricators, sealed unit manufacturers and installers optimise glazing specifications without compromising performance.
Compared with a traditional 6.8mm laminated glass, the new 4.8mm construction reduces weight while maintaining the P2A2 safety and security classification. The reduced weight can help to make insulated glass units more straightforward to process, handle and install, while also helping to reduce the load placed on window systems, hinges and locking mechanisms.
The thinner construction can also help to create new opportunities for insulated glazing design. In a standard 24mm double-glazed unit, manufacturers can replace 6.8mm STADIP® with 4.8mm STADIP® PLUS, improving the U-value performance3 from 1.1 W/m2.K to 1.0 W/m2.K
Alongside thermal benefits, 4.8mm STADIP® PLUS can also enhance acoustic performance. In a typical 4/16/4.8 STADIP® PLUS double-glazed configuration, it delivers a 2–3dB improvement in acoustic performance compared with a standard 4/16/4 monolithic glass unit5. The product also offers higher light transmission than thicker laminated alternatives in certain configurations6, helping maximise natural daylight without sacrificing safety or performance.
For triple glazing and enhanced thermal specifications, the reduced glass thickness can enable larger cavity sizes within the same overall unit thickness, helping achieve lower U-values in specific configurations7. The product is also available with coated options, including PLANITHERM® NEO, to suit a wide range of residential and commercial specifications.
The launch also reflects Saint-Gobain Glass’ continued focus on reducing embodied carbon across its product portfolio. 4.8mm STADIP® PLUS is manufactured in the UK using PLANICLEAR®, lower-carbon flat glass as standard. PLANICLEAR® is now a lower-carbon, clear float glass, based on the product’s new, third-party verified EPD4. The new declaration shows a carbon reduction of more than 34% compared with the previous PLANICLEAR® EPD. PLANICLEAR® now achieves 7.22kg CO2e/m2 for 4mm glass (Global Warming Potential categories A1-A3).
Manufacturing in the UK also helps support supply chain security and product availability, while Saint-Gobain Glass’ continued investment in glass recycling means that every tonne of cullet used in the manufacture of new float glass prevents the use of around 1.2 tonnes of virgin raw materials and approximately 700kg of CO₂ emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 38.

In a standard double-glazed unit (DGU) there are four potential surfaces to which coatings can be applied: surface 1 faces outdoors, surface 2 and surface 3 face each other inside the DGU, separated by a peripheral spacer which creates an insulating air space, and surface 4 faces directly indoors. The Saint-Gobain recommendation is to always toughen the centre-pane of a triple-glazed unit when using silica glass.
