A multi-million-pound project to extend and upgrade a hospice in West Yorkshire for which Morley Glass donated an extensive package of high-performance IGUs and motorised integral blinds has been completed.

The new state-of-the-art facility at Overgate Hospice has transformed what had become a dated building into a world-class Inpatient Unit, enabling the team to provide the highest levels of care and support for people living with life-limiting illnesses. The quality of these facilities will be matched in the team’s next project, which is already underway to refurbish the site’s original Victorian building to create a new Day Hospice – a project that Morley Glass is also supporting.
At the heart of the Calderdale community since 1981, Overgate Hospice has delivered outstanding care for more than 45 years, but investment was needed to continue this and ensure the facilities are more appropriate for modern patient needs. Following the launch of the ‘Big Build Appeal’ fundraising project in 2024, the hospice embarked on its plans to radically redevelop the site with the goal of increasing its capacity for care in its Inpatient Unit and Day Hospice services, while also creating a more dignified and supportive environment for patients and their families.
The new Inpatient Unit provides spacious new bedrooms which are filled with light and fully accessible, complete with ensuite bathrooms suitable for people with complex mobility needs. Key to achieving the design aims was the incorporation of full-width sliding doors in each of the 16 new bedrooms, that not only maximise natural light but also ensure patients have easy access to the attractively landscaped outdoor spaces.
Morley Glass saw an opportunity to assist and allow the team to enhance the specification by providing motorised integral blind units for the sliding doors, as well as for the other windows within the bedrooms. In addition, the company offered to manufacture and supply all the other standard IGUs required for the rest of the complex at no cost.
Laura Golding, Director of Income Generation at Overgate Hospice, said:
“We are incredibly grateful to Morley Glass for their continued support for our Big Build Appeal, which has helped us to create our new Inpatient Unit and transform the care we can provide to patients and families. The new unit opened its doors in August, marking a hugely important milestone for Overgate.

“But our Big Build journey doesn’t stop there. Our next exciting step is the development of a new, larger Day Hospice, which will provide a flexible and welcoming space for more patients to access our specialist support, therapeutic and social activities. With dedicated consultation and therapy rooms, an accessible kitchen and beautiful views across the gardens, the new space has been designed around the needs and wellbeing of our patients.
“We’re looking forward to opening our new Day Hospice in early 2027 and continuing to build on the progress and partnerships we have made. The support of businesses like Morley Glass has been so important in helping us make our Big Build vision a reality.”
Ian Short, Managing Director of Morley Glass, added:
“We are really pleased to be supporting Overgate Hospice – congratulations to the team on creating such an incredible facility.
“From the moment I first learned of the Big Build Appeal and the plans for redeveloping the hospice, I wanted our company to help. With the range of products and systems we manufacture, there was an amazing opportunity for us to not only meet the specification, but offer something even better so patients and their families benefit from outstanding care in the highest quality environment.
“In particular, we wanted to help the team create rooms which offer the perfect combination of privacy, comfort and access to the gardens by providing specialist glazing with motorised integral blinds for the sliding doors. The ScreenLine® MB System we used here enables patients to operate the blinds using a remote control from their beds, offering easy operation for those with reduced mobility.”
The integral blind units will also benefit Overgate Hospice from an operational perspective. As the blinds are permanently encapsulated within the glass units, they support infection control objectives as they cannot attract dirt or dust, offering a very low maintenance solution that is reliable and durable for the long term.
